- Thanks to all the help I've received on this, I've finally found
- the secret menu. For anyone who cares to know:
-
- On the opening screen, where you can push the joystick up for high
- scores, down for instructions or press fire to play, pull down and
- go to the instruction screen. The bottom line on this screen says
- something like "Press FIRE to return to menu".
-
- On this screen, press and hold down the Shift and PI keys at the
- same time. After a couple seconds, the word FIRE on that bottom line
- should change from black to brownish-gray. Not exactly the "glowing"
- I was expecting, but it is a noticable change of color. As soon as
- FIRE turns gray, let go of the keys and press the Up-Arrow (same key
- as PI, but without the Shift). Press and release it a couple times
- until the word FIRE turns black again, then immediately press the "*"
- key. The secret menu should appear. It took several tries each time
- to get the menu. Sometimes the FIRE will turn gray but won't turn
- black again. In this case, just press FIRE to leave the screen, pull
- down to go back to the instruction screen, and try again.
-
- For anyone interested, here's what the secret menu looks like:
-
-
- Welcome to the Secret Menu!!!
-
- Here are your options:
-
- 1. Record your own demo
- 2. Disable Sprite Kill
- * 3. Enable Sprite Kill (Default)
- 4. Manual Select for Demo/Random
- * 5. Automatic Screen Select (Default)
- 6. Author Information
- 7. Exit Secret Menu
-
-
- The asterisks show the current settings. The first option lets you
- play a screen and records your moves to be used as a demo. The second
- and third options let you turn Sprite Kill on and off (with it off,
- things like fallings stars and snowflakes can't kill you). The fourth
- and fifth options were the ones I was hoping for - with option five
- selected, you can play "Random 24 hour shift", and the game lets you
- choose the order of the screens (see below). The sixth option shows
- a screen with info about the author, and the last option lets you get
- back to the game after setting/using the other options.
-
- To choose your own screens (in 24hr random mode), the game presents
- the following screen:
-
- Select one of these to play:
-
- ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWX.
-
-
- As you finish each screen, it's letter is replaced with a period.
- I imagine that if you finish A thru X, the final period will change
- to a Y to let you select the "Mystery Screen", but I haven't tested
- this out yet. Here's the screen each letter corresponds to (the
- asterisks indicate which screens are affected by "Sprite Kill):
-
- A Taxi Trainer
- B Electroids
- * C Crossfire
- D Taxi Maze
- * E Taxi Pong
- * F Shooting Stars
- * G Black Hole
- H Lasers
- I Sky Scraper
- J The Switch
- * K Interference
- L Magnets
- M Puzzler
- N Space Mines
- O The Beach
- * P Blizzard
- Q Short -N- Sweet
- R Rebound
- S Fast Break
- T On the Move
- U Shift-o-Rama
- V Turbo Taxi
- W Teleports
- X Beanstalk
-
-
- Once again, I'd like to thank everyone who helped me out with this.
- You've solved a mystery that's been bugging me for years. I hope this
- helps out someone else.
